Eating With GERD

Realizing How Poorly We Eat – A Trip to the Mall

September 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I had a major amount of shopping to get done this past weekend and decide to run to the mall in the morning.  Of course, I was still going strong at lunch time and suddenly realized I famished!  OK, so I’ll just run over to the Food Court and grab something.  It shouldn’t be so hard to find something safe to eat, right?  WRONG!

Chicken is healthy.  I eat a lot of it at home.  So, hey, Chik-Fil-A.  A sandwich (not the fried kind) might be good.  But, wait a minute.  I already did a test run on those and the chicken has black pepper on it that really bothered me.  Let’s see, what else is there?  Burger King? I think they have salads.  I glance at the menu and as it turns out, this is a mini-Burger King and the menu is limited.  Guess what they left out?  Salads.  So, I venture over to a Japanese place that serves chicken over rice.  But, of course, when I inquire, they add garlic to their chicken.  Other places were more than obviously off limits like the Gyro Wraps and curly fries (Oh man, I loved those things) and the Pizza by the Slice place.  The cafeteria style home cooking place cooks all the veggies in butter and today only has meatloaf and fried chicken.

At one point I stood in the Food Court in awe of how there was not one healthy, low fat, non-spicey choice for me.  When I think of how many times I started shopping trips with a Starbucks in the morning and moved to a Food Court lunch at noon, it is no mystery that I have lost almost 20 pounds in the 3 months I’ve been dealing with GERD.  I looked at the hundreds of people eating there and was jealous at first.  Then, I realized I’m actually beginning to prefer the healthy choices that are being forced on me.

There’s only one thing I haven’t gotten over yet, Curly Fries!  Darn it!
